How to Get the Most Out of the Perseid Meteor Shower
Every August, Earth passes through a stream of dust left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. Tiny bits of comet debris, most no larger than grains of sand, slam into our atmosphere at nearly 130,000 miles per hour, creating the bright streaks of light we call meteors.
The Perseids have earned their reputation as one of the year’s favorite meteor showers. They produce spectacular fireballs that can light up the entire sky.
If you’ve never watched a meteor shower before, here are a few tips to make the most of it.
Forget the Telescope
Meteor showers are one of the few astronomical events that are actually better without a telescope.
A telescope shows only a tiny patch of sky. Meteors can appear anywhere overhead, so the wider your view, the better your chances of catching them. Binoculars aren’t much help either. This is one night when your own eyes are the perfect observing instrument.
A reclining chair or blanket is far more valuable than fancy equipment.
Give Yourself Time
Meteor watching rewards patience.
Some minutes you may see three meteors in quick succession. Other times, several minutes can pass without a single streak across the sky. That’s completely normal.
Plan to spend at least an hour outside. The longer you stay, the more likely you are to catch one of the spectacular fireballs the Perseids are famous for.
Darkness Makes the Difference
Your eyes need about twenty to thirty minutes to fully adapt to darkness.
Avoid checking your phone every few minutes. Even a quick glance at a bright screen resets your night vision and makes fainter meteors harder to see. If you need light, flashlights or headlamps with a red-light mode are best.
The darker your surroundings, the richer the show becomes.
You Don’t Need to Look at Perseus
The shower gets its name because the meteors appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus. That doesn’t mean you should stare directly at it.
In fact, many of the longest, most dramatic meteors appear well away from the radiant. The best strategy is simply to lean back and take in as much of the sky as possible.

Let the Desert Work Its Magic
Joshua Tree National Park is one of the best places in Southern California to experience a meteor shower. The dark skies allow even faint meteors to stand out, and the wide-open desert horizon gives you an expansive view of the sky.
If you can, move away from campground lights, parking lot lighting, and passing headlights. Even a small reduction in artificial light can reveal many more meteors.
It is a very popular time to visit, so plan on a wait to enter and exit the Park, and expect to share the most popular spots with lots of other excited stargazers.
What About This Year’s Moon?
The Moon plays a big role in every meteor shower.
A bright moon can wash out many of the faintest meteors, while a new moon allows the shower to truly shine. This year, the Perseids’ peak coincides with a new moon, so conditions are ideal to see as many meteors as possible.
Make It an Experience
The Perseids aren’t just about counting meteors.
Bring a friend. Pack a blanket. Listen to the sounds of the desert after dark. Let your eyes wander across the sky.
Some of the best moments come between the meteors, when you’re simply lying beneath thousands of stars waiting for the next flash of light.

Please, when encouraging people to come to Joshua tree to enjoy the meteor showers, please emphasize the fact that yes, they need to get away from lights-BUT this does NOT mean to run randomly off road looking for a dark corner, esp in the park! Stay on the road and established trails!!!!
