The blistering cold of winter has finally arrived in the Hi Desert and with it comes the face-chapping murder winds. To the mid-westerners who have chosen to visit us around this time of year, this is considered warm. But for me, these temperatures are the kind of chill that sinks deep into one’s bones, especially when walking our dog Lola at 7 am in the morning. My lizard brain has kicked in with the primary goal of staying cozy.

One way I’m doing this is by indulging my dark and supernatural gothic side with a re-reading of Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. This was something I had been wanting to do since I learned that another feature film adaptation of this novel was going to be released in theaters on Valentine’s Day, 2026. This will be the fifth feature film adaption of Brontë’s masterpiece. It stars Margot Robbie as Catherine Earnshaw, Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, and is directed by Emerald Fennell, who also directed Saltburn and Promising Young Woman. The soundtrack features a full-length album by Charlie XCX, who’s first released track “House” featuring John Cale has already become a viral sensation. The Fennell-directed movie has a couple of theatrical trailers, which look spectacular on the big screen, and capture the essence of Brontë’s masterpiece, with brooding score, bleak weather, and lustful looks from the actors.
