The Desert Trumpet has proven itself to be a valuable resource in Twentynine Palms and surrounding community. We are happy subscribers. However, we're not happy about the thought of paying money to read AI produced content. We hope that the Desert Trumpet will continue to produce the human generated content that we value. - Beth Sheffield
Thanks for your thoughts and you paid subscription! Rest assured that we do not intend to produce AI generated content! However many Agenda previews involve summarizing information in the staff reports attached to the agenda and placing it in our standard format, which is time consuming. Having AI assist with this is a huge help and allows the writer to spend more time on the accountability and analysis that sets Desert Trumpet apart from the other Morongo Basin news outlets. That formatting and summarizing is what I meant by “first draft.”
We are a tiny staff operating under an 50% budget cut, and it’s an election year that requires extra reporting. Plus it’s becoming increasingly important to cover unincorporated areas like Joshua Tree, the San Bernardino Board of Supervisors and Yucca Valley. Plus if Marines deploy from the Base for the war, we should cover that too!
We see AI as a tool, not a human replacement. We have been using Otter.ai for some time now to generate transcripts of City meetings, and AI to help us organize and summarize the volumes of content provided in public information requests. But we also recognize that our readers will want to know when and how we are using AI! And we promise to add disclosures to any article where this tool has been used.
Thank you. That is helpful info. May I request that the portions of content that have been AI generated are clearly identified within the body of the article? For example, “The above content was summarized by AI” or a similar statement would be helpful.
We find the Desert Trumpet to be an invaluable community resource and do not want to lose this resource, nor our trust in this resource. Being clear on what is AI generated would be very helpful in this regard. - Beth Sheffield
