Regarding the 29 Palms vs Joshua Tree designation. Clearly the TBID, or at least Ben Uyeda understands the significance of promoting a business or event using Joshua Tree as a descriptive. Since the purpose is to attract tourists from outside the area, one has to ask oneself, which is the bigger, more famous attraction, 29 Palms, or JTNP? What is a potential tourist going to query in a search engine? (or yelp, or booking.com, for example?) I would guess that around 90% of searches for “things to do/places to stay/places to eat” will end in “Joshua Tree”, not 29 Palms, Landers, Yucca Valley, etc. It benefits both the entrepreneur and surrounding communities to bill their events or businesses as being in Joshua Tree, even though technically, they are not. It is important to sometimes step out of the local mindset, and look through the lens of someone in NYC, or Milwaukee. A place needs to build its prominence first, before stepping off the coattails of its more famous neighbor.

I don’t think anyone disputes the right of RESET to brand themselves in a way that works for them. However, once they choose to be a venue for an event that receives money from the City of 29 Palms, that’s in 29 Palms because the hotel is its base of operations — doesn't Joshua Tree branding on the hotel present a challenge given the obligations of the grant to promote 29 Palms?
