Thanks to our dedicated readers, Desert Trumpet stories received more than 171,000 views in 2024—that’s more than twice the number in 2023! Below is part three of our three part recap of articles that garnered more than 1,000 views each over the course of the last year. Coverage of controversial developments and their potential effect on the desert ecosystem and the City’s mixing of church and state were popular among our readers, while election and storm coverage led the list.
The coverage is grouped by topic with updates added on stories with new information.
Part One was published on Sunday, December 29.
Part Two was published on Monday, December 30.
#1 Local Elections
Several election stories made our list, but the most popular story of 2024, bar none, was our overview of Measure W with 4,360 views. Measure W was the third attempt to repeal the special property tax that funds the FP-5 Fire Service Zone. A “yes” vote repealed the annual tax of $171, while a “no” vote kept the tax in place. A majority of residents voted to support the fire district with 43,176 “no” votes, while the repeal attempt failed with 32,211 “yes” votes.
New for the Desert Trumpet in our second year of election coverage was reporting on several Basin-wide elections. We hoped to help amplify local positions like those at the health and water districts seeking engaged residents willing to run and serve their communities.
