Why have I not seen any publicity for the decades-old Annual Basketball Tournament, where teams from around the state come here to play over the weekend? Why can't we have periodic girls' fastpitch or coed softball tournaments on any of our fields at Luckie Park and Knott Sky Park? What happened to the annual soapbox derby races down Adobe Road? One idea that was put forth by the now-defunct Economic Development advisory committee was to have all tattoo shops set up in one location to create an artists community of tattoo artists that could be advertised outside of the community. I once obtained national news coverage of our Outhouse Races during the Pioneer Days, but it appears there are many events that could be sponsored by local businesses to draw in foot traffic downtown.
Outhouse races at PD continue and are a time-honored tradition that is picking up speed again.
As to tournament play, as a lodging stakeholder, I have suggested similar to the board in the past. Namely, to entice the senior softball league. There are tons of local players, and Senior Softball (by one example) offers a demographic of people who have a percentage of players from within the drive market far enough for overnight stays, have disposable time and income; they often bring family and explore before and after games, hitting shops and restaurants during schedule gaps, and many like to gamble, so you have that too. We could use the playing fields of Luckie Park, Knotts Sky and depending on need/registration, the neighboring fields of Sunburst Park in JT & YV would be something to explore. (St. George & Hurricane do similar by example.)
So I agree with you...what opportunities can we tap into to bring new and unique visitors to 29?
Any movement on economic growth and stability apart from tourism?
This will certainly be an interesting discussion at when strategic planning is on the City Council agenda on August 26.
