As a Basin resident who lives in an unincorporated area, I want to thank you for bringing the bike path initiative to our attention. I look forward to updates. The bike paths that I am aware of in 29 Palms seem to be well planned and well maintained. The bike paths in Joshua Tree are neither. The downtown bike path runs between diagonally parked vehicles that need to back out onto the path, then turn to align with highway traffic before merging. Who in CalTrans thought that was a good idea? The other path, between the old elementary school and the new one, is notable for two things: it has a secondary, probably unplanned, purpose as a paved footpath for pedestrians walking into town from the Avenidas which is great. What is not great is that when the road floods, Sunburst is cleared of sand, mud, and debris, but the bike path is not. There are long stretches where the path is covered with loose sand which is dangerous for cyclists. Doesn’t the county have an obligation to keep the bike path clear as well? What good would a dedicated bike path connecting YV and 29, if it is not maintained?
