CLEP not being registered as required ought to be red flag for the 29 Council members.

Thanks Steve - it's been a challenge to convince the City Manager and Council that they need to look at two systems when vetting nonprofits - the Secretary of State system and the DOJ system. This is because DOJ registration isn't reflected in the SoS system -- which is the only system they check. I inquired with the DOJ about why registration isn't reflected in the Bizfile system and they explained that the difference in agencies requires different systems.

Giving CLEP the benefit of the doubt, I also think some older nonprofits, especially those which file a postcard instead of a 990, which CLEP does, may not be aware of the registration requirement. I know that SASSAS, the nonprofit I used to direct, learned about it through our accounting firm. If small nonprofit does their own books, they many never know and just fly under the radar. (Of course, they should know NOW that we've been reporting on their lack of registration since November).
