To lighten the tone and show off the fabulous wildlife diversity of Twentynine Palms, we’re starting a Wildlife Wednesday series.
My family lives at the edge of Indian Cove, and our water dish brings all the critters to the yard. Wait and see who turns up in future Wildlife Wednesdays!
You think jackrabbits are quiet? You’ll want to turn up your sound for this one.
These iconic hares are abundant, although after the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease burned through in 2020, we weren’t seeing them around for awhile. I’m glad they are back and enjoying the lush greenery Hurricane Hilary brought. (They probably haven’t loved the gnats biting those big ears of theirs.)
While we are talking about wildlife, the Mojave Desert Land Trust is holding a forum on the impacts of tourism on our wildlife and wildlands in the Morongo Basin. The Desert Trumpet will report on it, but if you want to go, it’s tonight, Wednesday, September 27, at 6:30 pm. at the MDLT headquarters in Joshua Tree. Space is limited; email cclarke@npca.org if you would like to attend.
We’d like to see your wildlife photos and videos! Send them to deserttrumpet29@gmail.com. Be sure to put “Wildlife Wednesday” in the subject line and include location and credit information with your submissions!
Desert Trumpet writer Kat Talley-Jones is a member of the Public Arts Advisory Committee, which is a part of the City of Twentynine Palms.
The Desert Trumpet is looking for writers! If you are interested helping us cover Twentynine Palms, send us an email! deserttrumpet29@gmail.com.

Crazy about Raging Rabbits! I look forward to following your posts!
