I’ve used Hipcamp (outside the Grand Canyon) and it was a positive experience, for what it’s worth. I think if the numbers and density are strictly limited it could be a good thing around here.

I was at the meeting -- and as was mentioned in the article, hearing the Hipcamp letter made me wonder if they understand some of the issues here. For instance, sure, there is A LOT of land and empty parcels. But a fair percentage of the empty parcels are landlocked, so the access is across someone else's land, or the access is on private roads maintained by residents and not by the city or county. Usually owners of vacant parcels aren't contributing to local road maintenance.

I was surprised by the sparse number of tourist commercial parcels...and this is due to the 2012 general plan predating the demand. At the end of the meeting I spoke with Jim Krushat, because ultimately the city needs to revisit the general plan, and figure out whether there are more locations for tourist commercial zoning. And how many tourist accommodations we need here. If the zoning is updated, maybe that would curb developer desires to create camping, glamping and resort opportunities in residential and rural living zoning.
