Desert Trumpet Ethics and Corrections Policy

The Desert Trumpet follows the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists and the membership standards of the Institute for Nonprofit News.

Accuracy and Sourcing

We verify facts before publication, relying on documented public records, on the record sources and direct citations as much as possible. We give subjects of critical coverage an opportunity to respond before publication.

Conflicts of Interest

We disclose potential conflicts of interest at the bottom of our articles. Where a conflict is significant such as staff involvement in litigation or advocacy connected to a story we reassign reporting and copyediting to contributors without that conflict, as described in our Ofland Litigation Policy. Readers who feel our coverage crosses a line are welcome to say so in comments or by emailing editor@deserttrumpet.org.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we say so. Factual errors are corrected as soon as they’re verified, with a note on the article stating what was changed and when, either in parenthesis next to the correction or as a footnote. Significant corrections are discussed in an editor’s note at the top of the article.

Clarifications

Where language was accurate but unclear or open to misreading, we may publish a clarification, noted using the corrections guidelines stated above.

Contact us at editor@deserttrumpet.org. We review all correction requests promptly and respond directly to the person who raised it.
